Drag nights can be the most memorable, most heart-warming and, not to mention, the funniest nights. From October 7, a competition called The Majesty is gonna be bringing 9 queens to stage to give the performance of a lifetime. It’s going to be like Edinburgh’s version of RuPaul’s Drag Race, with one queen going home every week during the eight-week-long competition.
Songs will be sung, tears will be shed and the immense sparkle will be seen from space in Cowgate’s famous bar The Three Sisters. Each week, the contestants will be faced with a new theme they can interpret in whatever way they choose. The performance will be the main criteria to be judged, as well as whatever the brief is for the week. There will be a live audience cheering the performers on, three resident judges and a guest judge.
And on the fateful night of November 25, a winner will be crowned and proclaimed as The Majesty. The crowned one will receive a cash prize of £1000, as well as a main stage slot for Edinburgh Pride 2023. Not to worry though, there will be an actual crown. On top of the main prize, ‘gag-worthy’ weekly prizes will also be awarded, giving much-needed encouragement during the eight-week extravaganza. The judges have now been revealed and we are excited.
Blaze, Scotland’s lip-syncing pop star with eight years of experience will be a permanent judge throughout the competition. Darren Glasgow, an icon in Edinburgh’s gay scene, will also be there judging the performers with a watchful eye. And finally, Michael Davies is also set to be the third judge. What a trio!
The event organisers invited everyone to apply, and did not stick to the traditional term of ‘drag queen’. All forms of drag were welcome, and we cannot wait to see what the turnout will be. Now, 9 queens were cast and are ready to perform like everybody’s watching. The Majesty will kick off on October 7 at 8pm at The Three Sister’s newest edition – the ‘live’ room.
