Scotland is the land of whisky, with abundant distilleries to explore, and endless creations to sample. However, most bars and restaurants don’t stock that many unique whiskies, or just stick to the most well-known brands. But what if we told you there is a secret place in Edinburgh city centre that not only stocks around 200 whiskies but is also located within a five-star glass-front hotel that used to be a church? The Whisky Snug offers just that and more, offering guests intimate splendour in its cosy space.
The Whisky Snug is located at The Glasshouse Hotel on Greenside Place, and is a quiet oasis from the hustle and bustle of city life.
For those who wondered what the glass-covered building is while walking past the Omni Centre, it used to be a chapel. The historic building was founded by Lady Glenorchy in the 1700s, boasting a majestic Gothic facade preserved to this day. While the chapel has changed purposes over the years, it has been renovated and founded as The Glasshouse Hotel in 2003.
According to The Glasshouse, the hotel itself offers the “most dramatic views in Edinburgh”, including rooms with terraces overlooking Calton Hill.
Secret Edinburgh got the chance to visit The Whisky Snug, and try out some of the selection. While it’s impossible to try all 200 in one go, the spot provides the perfect excuse to return. We started off with the Ardnamurchan Rum Cask Release, followed by the more smoky Ardbeg Uigeadail. We finished off with Adelphi Limited 36 years old, which is a luxurious way to end the evening.
Moreover, those who are not into whisky as much can opt for a selection of cocktails and gins, making it a destination everyone can appreciate.
On top of a mind-blowing whisky selection, the hidden spot also offers Afternoon Tea between 1pm and 4pm every day for guests to enjoy. Expect traditional favourites such as scones and tiny sandwiches, as well as unique handmade sweet treats.
To access The Whisky Snug, guests will need to go to the hotel reception for security reasons, as it can only be accessed with the lift. So, the spot is officially our new favourite whisky destination in Edinburgh!
