The longest days of the year are officially here, as Summer Solstice is upon us. Edinburghers have always been known to celebrate the occasion around the city, and we’re no different here at Secret Edinburgh. Whether you just want to find out the exact times and dates of the Summer Solstice in Edinburgh or want to plan some fun activities for the week, we’ve put everything you need to know into one place.
When is the Summer Solstice?
Each year, the Summer Solstice takes place between June 20 and 22. In 2024, it falls on June 20 at exactly 9:50pm. The occasion is also known as the first day of summer.
When will the sun rise and set?
The sun rose at 4:26am this morning and will set at 10:02pm. The times will also remain the same until June 23, when the sun will rise one second later, marking the start of the official shortening of daylight hours.
What is Summer Solstice?
Well, I hate to break it to all the flat earthers out there, but Summer Solstice is the direct result of the Earth spinning around the sun, impacting the length of daylight hours. We get the longest days when the sun reaches the most direct angle towards the Northern Hemisphere while the Earth spins on a tilted axis throughout the year. It’s the best time of the year!
Where can I watch the sunset in Edinburgh?
Our favourite wee places are either in Newhaven Harbour by the water overlooking the three bridges or Calton Hill, where you can bring a wee blanket and a takeaway pizza from Franco Manca near St Andrew Square. Other spots could include Arthur’s Seat with a 360 view of the city if you’re feeling athletic, as well as Blackford Hill. If you’re feeling like a sun trap rooftop terrace, head to the 1820 rooftop bar atop Johnnie Walker Princes Street.
