How would one determine a cool neighbourhood? Well, it’s a place with flourishing culture, tasty, fresh and affordable food, as well as an overall sense of community. This year, Edinburgh neighbourhood Leith is the place to be, as it was named one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world by Time Out.
To determine which area is the coolest, 12,000 people in their home cities were surveyed, discussing culture, food and drink spots, new openings and “factors including community and social ventures, access to open and green space, and thriving street life”. The results proved to show that neighbourhoods around the world have become even more global than before, with plenty of community spots, as well as more cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as international communities.
As an absolute delight, Leith is officially one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world and ranked 16th on the list of 40. Plus, Edinburgh was also named the best city in the world in 2022, and has deservingly reaped worldwide recognition.
As a neighbourhood, Leith not only has three Michelin-star restaurants within less than a 10-minute walk from each other (two of them are just across the street, actually), but plenty of events, scenic spots and a strong sense of community. What is more, Michelin-star restaurant The Kitchin was also named as one of the best in the world at the end of September. So, it’s safe to say Leith’s food scene is world-class.
Locals and visitors alike can explore The Shore, a quaint area with plenty of cafes and bars overlooking the water, attend seasonal markets at a local independent brewery Moonwake, stock up on crystals and join a coven at the Leith Witchcraft Market, and, most importantly, access the area in less than 20 minutes from Princes Street with the newly-built trams!
So, just pop down and have a wee wander to see it for yourself!
