We are officially in the heart of Bank Holiday season, and while those long weekends are always a treat, 2027 is shaping up to be a true standout. Thanks to the way “substitute” days fall, workers in Scotland are looking at an incredible stretch of downtime.
What are ‘Substitute’ Days?
When a standard Bank Holiday lands on a Saturday or Sunday, the day off doesn’t just vanish. Instead, a weekday, which is typically the following Monday, is designated as a substitute holiday to ensure the public still gets their break.
The 2027 bank holiday jackpot
The real magic happens during the festive period. Because of how the calendar aligns, you can effectively turn a couple of vacation days into a massive holiday:
- The 11-day break: By booking just two days of annual leave (December 30 and 31, 2027), you can enjoy a total of 11 consecutive days off, spanning from Christmas Day, all the way to January 4, 2028.
- The five-day weekend: In early 2028, January 1 falls on a Saturday. This creates substitute holidays on both Monday, Jan 3 and Tuesday, Jan 4, resulting in five days of rest for many.
Upcoming 2026 highlights

Before we reach 2027, there are plenty of Bank Holidays to mark in your current calendar:
- Monday, May 4: Early May Bank Holiday.
- Monday, May 25: Spring Bank Holiday.
- Monday, June 15: A special, one-off Bank Holiday confirmed for the World Cup.
Important Note: The Government reminds citizens that employers are not legally required to provide paid leave on bank holidays. Additionally, these dates may shift the timing of benefit payments.
