Whether it’s summer or the height of winter, we Edinburghers love our rooftop bars. Whether you’re looking for a wee suntrap spot with stunning views or a heated terrace overlooking the castle to keep you warm, you will find it all in our list of the very best rooftop bars in Edinburgh.
1. 1820 rooftop bar
Okay, so this one is a true gem bang on in the city centre of Edinburgh. Atop the Johnnie Walker Princes Street sits the 1820 rooftop bar, boasting 180-degree views over the city. Visitors can marvel at the castle on one side, and wave the setting sun goodbye on the other. What is more, the terrace offers sun throughout the day, so it’s the perfect place to enjoy those sunny days with a cocktail in hand. While the cocktails are on the expensive side starting at £11, guests can opt for a wee glass of wine or simply a cold pint for £6.

2. Cold Town House
Another one of our favourites that can be visited no matter the time of year. With stunning sights of the Edinburgh Castle just above the terrace, Cold Town House is located on the top level of a refurbished church that is now a multi-storey bar. The rooftop bar is especially exciting for those who love beer, as Cold Town House is also an award-winning beer brand. You can even get beer floats like the Pineapple Float, or a variety of Radlers such as the Pornstar Radler. Plus, if you’re feeling peckish, opt for the homemade Neapolitan stone-baked pizzas: they even make a Nutella pizza for those with a sweet tooth!

3. Lochrin Rooftop Bar
Located on the top floor of Moxy Fountainbridge, Lochrin Rooftop Bar offers panoramic views over the city. Guests can watch the sunset on the outdoor terrace or sit indoors on a rainy day and admire the views. The spot is also known for its quirky ever-changing cocktails: expect concoctions such as Mango and Chilli Margaritas, Espresso Martinis and plenty of Spritzes. The bar has officially reopened on May 17, 2024 after a refurbishment and rebranding, boasting a fresh look and menu for visitors to indulge in.

4. Chaophraya
Chaophraya Edinburgh is not only perfect for dinner, but the spot also boasts a stunning rooftop bar and an outdoor terrace. While it doesn’t offer as good of a view as the other rooftop bars on the list, the food makes up for everything else. You can still expect stunning views over George Street and its rooftops as well as the castle on the other side, however, so it’s still not too shabby. The menu offers carefully crafted Thai food such as the classic Pad Thai or the Gaeng Massaman curry, as well as ever-changing specials.

5. The Lookout By Gardener’s Cottage
The Lookout by GC is the most expensive rooftop bar on the list, located on Calton Hill. With both an indoor space and an outdoor terrace for that satisfying summer cocktail, the rooftop is the place to go for special occasions. The seasonal menu is curated using local produce, with a plant-based or pescatarian menu available.
