Making the perfect mixtape with all your favourite songs from the 80s was no easy feat back when cassettes were the way to do it. Recording over was a job and a half, as time-consuming as waiting for your favourite songs to come on the radio – and those who have done it understand the struggle. ‘NOW That’s What I Call A Musical’ brings the perfect 80s playlist alongside a stellar cast, with a heartwarming coming-of-age and beyond story to remember.
‘NOW That’s What I Call A Musical’ is gracing the Edinburgh Playhouse stage between February 25 and March 1, starring special guest 80s star Toyah Wilcox as herself, Nina Wadia from Eastenders as Jemma and and X Factor winner Sam Bailey as April.
With hits from Blondie, Tears For Fears, Spandau Ballet, Eurythmics and so many more, the musical brings back memories 40 years back to the chart-topping classics that we all know and love, no matter the age. The public has enjoyed the music so much, with 200 million copies sold worldwide.
The plot is set in 1989 Birmingham following two school friends Gemma and April. As they are busy making the most important decisions of their lives on what to do after graduating, the girls are also relying on Number One Magazine quizzes and dreaming of snogging Rick Astley. Cut to Birmingham 2009 and it’s the most dreaded event– the school reunion. Drama, old flames and receding hairlines come together as friends reunite and everything from the past starts to slot into place.
The story follows heartwarming themes of friendship, navigating heartbreak and change, finding one’s self-worth and understanding what really matters in life – the people you love and who love you.
