Freedom, beauty, truth and love are the things that make ‘Moulin Rouge’ The Musical come to life. With exceptional costumes, a stellar cast and fabulous staging, the show has officially embarked on its world tour, kicking things off in Edinburgh this April.
‘Moulin Rouge’ the musical has opened the world tour at the Edinburgh Playhouse on April 22, and will stay in Scotland until June 14, providing ample opportunity for locals and visitors alike to see the show. The production then moves onto Bristol on June 26 before gracing Manchester on August 20. Birmingham Hippodrome will also host ‘Moulin Rouge’ from October 15 before the show leave the UK to Dublin.
‘Moulin Rouge’ the musical follows Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 revolutionary film, adding its own flavour to it. While not all the original songs are included in the stage production, guests can expect both familiar and new melodies.
The cast includes Verity Thompson as Satine, Nate Landskroner as Christian, Cameron Blakely as Harold Zidler, Kurt Kansley as Toulouse-Lautrec, German Santiago as Santiago, James Bryers as The Duke, Kahlia Davis as Nini, Summer Priest as Arabia, Scott Sutcliffe as Baby Doll, Ellie Jane Grant as La Chocolat and Patrice Tipoki as Alternate Satine.
Secret Edinburgh got the chance to experience the musical for ourselves, embarking on a night of forbidden love, cabaret and the epitome of artistic expression. And no wonder, because ‘Moulin Rouge’ the musical is produced by a team of award-winning visionaries. One of the most eye-catching aspects of the show is the costumes by Catherine Zuber, accompanied by clever lighting by Justin Townsend and seamless scene transitions, where Derek McLane is the mastermind behind the sets.
Produced by Carmen Pavlovic and Gerry Ryan OAM for Global Creatures and Bill Damaschke, the musical is an indulgent extravaganza of unique mash-ups, telling a tragic love story that has resulted in quite a few tears from audience members around us. The show features songs like Bad Romance by Lady Gaga, Toxic by Britney Spears, Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend by Marilyn Monroe and, of course, Lady Marmelade by Christina Aguilera, Mýa, Lil’ Kim and P!nk.
While it’s not a carbon copy of the original film, ‘Moulin Rouge’ the musical promises a night of theatrical artistry at its best, showcasing the evident hard work of everyone involved.
