Ah, the giraffe. Undoubtedly, the majestic (and evolutionarily improbable, but here we are) animal deserves every last ounce of love. Well, you can now love the five Nubian giraffes from afar, because Edinburgh Zoo has launched a live Giraffe Cam. Ronnie, Arrow, Gerald, Fennessy and Gilbert will all come out to say hello at some point to the outdoor feeling area, where the camera is set up for everyone to view. If anyone figures out how to tell them apart, let us know!
During the summer, Edinburgers and visitors alike proved their love for giraffes after completing 29 million steps in support of Giraffe About Town trails. Giraffe About Town was an immensely successful project that showed 42 large giraffe sculptures decorated by artists and 30 small giraffe sculptures that school children embellished.
As giraffes are a critically endangered species, Edinburgh Zoo also raises money for their preservation. The said Giraffe About Town sculptures have been exhibited within the Zoo at the end of September, and now they will be sold at an auction at The National Museum of Scotland on October 4. Hosted by the TV personality and renowned auctioneer Charles Hanson, the auction will be a night to remember. It will also be live streamed through social media, such as Edinburgh Zoo’s instagram. All the money raised will go towards the conservation of wildlife.
As the tallest mammal in the world, giraffes stand up pretty much all the time. While it hurts to think about it for us humans, giraffes sleep, give birth and hang out standing up. As they live up to 25 years in the wild, the unique animals deserve our protection. Hopefully, the live Giraffe Cam will not only brighten up your day, but also inspire you to donate towards wildlife preservation.
Edinburgh Zoo also provides live streams of pandas, penguins, koalas and lions on their website. We don’t know about you, but we’ve got 5 tabs open watching all the animals right now!
