One might wonder, how do you measure a city’s spookiness levels? Well, it’s with ghost tours. A recent study by the holiday rental booking portal Holidu presented the ins and outs of available ghost and vampire tours through TripAdvisor in European cities. The research found that Edinburgh was a clear stand out as the spookiest city in Europe, with 31 amazingly rated tours available.
The study looked into the average rating of the available spooky tours within the cities, as well as the number of tours available, the average cost and the number of existing reviews to date. Edinburgh scored a whopping 4.9 out of 5, with 7,343 reviews and an average cost of €18.78 amongst the 31 tours.
London was the only other UK city to make the top ten, coming in at fourth place with 54 vampire & ghost tours available with an overall rating of 4.7 and an average cost of €31.69 per tour. Paris came second on the list, and the most expensive one at that: out of 19 tours averaging €71.68, it scored a generous score of 4.8.
Barcelona made the top three taking third place, with 15 tours averaging €17.80 with a score of 4.8. The fifth place went to Rome, the second most expensive tour average of €50.58, offering 31 tours with a rating of 4.7.
And in our misty Edinburgh, you can expect plenty of things to do this Halloween, including ghost stories, witches and lost bagpipers. One of our favourites this year is The Real Mary King’s Close two lantern-led tours. During the Lantern-Led Tour This Halloween, guests will be led by one of the old residents of Edinburgh and shown the way in complete darkness only by the flickering light of a lantern.
And during the True Crimes Tour, adult thrill-seekers will be taken down the infamous steps to uncover what crimes really happened at Mary King’s Close all those moons ago. What is more, Edinburgh deserves the spookiest city title not only for its tours: has so much more to offer, with plenty of amazing things happening this Halloween season.
