While Edinburgh is one of the most expensive places to live in the UK, especially on your own, tourists also have to pay up when visiting. From Airbnb prices to visiting landmarks, the cost of a wee getaway can quickly add up. While the city still boasts plenty of free things to do such as climbing Arthur’s Seat or visiting Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh Castle is not one of them.
In fact, Edinburgh Castle was named one of the most expensive tourist attractions in the world by Saving Spot. The site went through TripAdvisor reviews and counted how many times the word “expensive” was used to describe each attraction.
As a result, Edinburgh Castle ranked 14th on the list, counting a whopping 2,693 mentions of how pricey it is for the value one gets. No wonder I’ve never been to visit the inside in all these years!
The most expensive tourist attraction in the world is The Making of Harry Potter at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London with 8,283 mentions of the world “expensive”, while the Legoland Windsor Resort is second on the list.
The London Eye came third, while the Burj Khalifa was fourth in the ranking. The view from the Shard was fifth on the list, with 3,223 mentions.
So, we thought we’d have a look at some one-star reviews of Edinburgh Castle, as one of the most expensive tourist attractions in the world, ourselves. One person says: “Was really looking forward to visiting the castle unfortunately it was awful far too many people there we were rammed it touching shoulders on many artifacts.”
Another said: “Go to Stirling castle instead! They have a car park right at the gate which is only four quid for the day. the staff love their visitors. Uncrowded, good cafe. Edinburgh makes driving impossible and parking unaffordable – why support any city where it is clear the City Council hate you?”
