History fans, rejoice! The symbol of that is Edinburgh Castle has been put up on Airbnb for everyone to enjoy authentic overnight stays with a medieval twist. The new listing is set to be a huge hit, yet will not come cheap: a stay at the Edinburgh Castle will cost thrill seekers a whopping £401 a night.
A brief history
Edinburgh Castle stands on the summit of an ancient volcanic rock as has been mainly used a military base to help protect the city. The landmark is older than most people might think, with its earliest settlements dating back to as far as 900BC. During its first occupation by the Votadini people, later known as the Gododdin, the castle was called Din Eidyn.
While we can see the resemblance in the names, and once the fortress was occupied by the Angles in the year of 638, it was renamed Edinburgh. Later, it was besieged by the Scots in 1018 and retained its name since.
Edinburgh Castle on Airbnb
While it still remains a military base today, the government has kindly allowed for a part of Edinburgh Castle to be put up on Airbnb, allowing guests to experience the magic of history. However, don’t expect a luxurious five-star stay: guests will need to complete a mini military training before checking in, and will receive a rationed authentic supper, just like in the old days. So, will you dare to spend the night within the fortress?
April Fools! Did we get you? Edinburgh Castle is not actually on Airbnb, but if you do wish to visit the landmark, you can book a ticket in advance on its official website, and you will not need to complete a mini military training. Promise! We recommend to spend at least two hours there, as it has plenty of things to do within the fortress. What is more, you can also book an Edinburgh Castle Afternoon Tea Experience.
