The Sunday Times annual list of the ‘Best Places To Live In The UK‘ is here, where every little corner of the UK gets looked into. While there are many beautiful places in our country, Dunkeld is officially the best place to live in all of Scotland.
Dunkeld is located in Perthshire, around one hour and a half’s drive from Edinburgh. The village is a favourite for a wee day out, and offers lovely nature walks, soothing scenery and a cosy friendly atmosphere within the town.
Why Dunkeld?
While its always delightful to pay Dunkeld a visit for the day, living there is just as delightful, according to residents. For such a small place with a population of just over a thousand, it’s the kind of place where everyone knows everyone. If you’re out and about, be prepared to talk to all the people you run into.
It’s the slower kind of life that truly makes people happy in Dunkeld, where plenty of local businesses owned by both the younger generation and the older make the place more vibrant, bringing the quality over quantity mindset. The influx of all these independent businesses was kind of kicked off by The Great British Bake-Off star Flora Shedden’s Aran Bakery in 2017, after which plenty of other shops opened.
On top of the numerous small businesses that thrive in the village and the nature, the arts and music scene is also decent within the community. For example, the The Taybank and The Birnam Arts Institute are great examples of establishments that not only attract locals, but also tourists.
How was the list created?
You might wonder: how does one decide on what are the best places to live? According to The Sunday Times, they have looked into the latest inspection reports from schools, the quality of transport links as well as cycling paths, wi-fi speeds and local house prices.
Also mentioned within the reports were the community spirit, beautiful nature and a decent high street. It is evident that Dunkeld has a friendly community, stunning wildlife and picturesque scenery and enjoy small classrooms in the school.
The average house price in Dunkeld is about the average of houses in the UK, £356,800.
What is more, other Scottish towns were mentioned in the list. Joining Dunkeld, East Linton in East Lothian came second best place to live within the region, the Dundee suburb Newport-On-Tay in Fife came fifth after Portobello in Edinburgh and Shawlands in Glasgow and Tighnabruaich in Argyll and Bute also joined the list.
