The super-famous gastro diner Duck & Waffle can be seen while walking through Leith Street and is a trendy new addition to Edinburgh’s food scene having graced us in February. Edinburgh was the chosen one to become a new home for a Duck & Waffle branch as the brand’s first venture in the UK outside of London.
Duck & Waffle is most known for its signature dish based on the restaurant’s name, which contains a buttermilk waffle topped with a crispy duck leg confit and fried duck egg doused in mustard maple syrup. However, the menu is appetisingly wholesome, with plenty of vegan, gluten-free, breakfast, brunch, all day and late-night options.
Most recently, Duck & Waffle Edinburgh has brought on a chef-curated Set Menu featuring a multi-course selection of brand-new dishes balanced with signature classics for lunch, pre-theatre dining or a Sunday dinner. The new menu is available every Monday to Friday from 11:30am to 5pm, and on Sundays from 5pm to 11pm, costing only £23 for a two-course meal and £28 for three courses.
The menu was created by Culinary Director Daniel Barbosa and Executive Chef Lucia Gregusova, who made sure to include the best of Scottish produce and seafood in the mix. Secret Edinburgh got the chance to go try the menu out for ourselves: we tried a three-course menu, including the vegetarian version of the Duck & Waffle dish.
We started with a gluten-free version of the Atlantic Prawn Roll with Marie Rose sauce topped with dill, which created a refreshing balance of sweet and tangy. For the main event, the vegetarian Wanna Be Duck & Waffle with crispy tempura hen of the wood’s mushroom, fried duck egg, mustard maple syrup and a gluten-free buttermilk waffle was a pleasant surprise, as the gluten-free waffle tasted just like the real deal and the flavours created a satisfying feel. It is safe the meat was not missed within the vegetarian option, yet there is nothing like the soft flavour of a crispy leg confit.
And for dessert, the Cranachan Waffle is made for the perfect closing act, with whiskey cream, raspberry sorbet and honey oats in between a gluten-free waffle. A true delight for anyone with a sweet tooth, the waffle was cooked to perfection, with an ideal balance of sweet and sour.
So, in addition to the beautifully presented food and drinks in its new set menu, Duck & Waffle also boasts swanky décor, as well as an attentively caring service.
