Dearest Gentle Reader,
It should come as little surprise to learn that Candlelight in Edinburgh is broadening its musical horizons. Indeed, the concert series has presented its fair share of first-rate programming; however, a string ensemble recreating your favourite TV series’ soundtrack might just top them all. Bridgerton, the romance show that has captured the hearts of the nation and the rest of the world with its privileged personages and 19th-century decadence, is a true source of inspiration.
What could it be about Bridgerton that piqued the interest of a concert experience rooted in classical tributes? Why its renown for featuring classical covers, of course. Candlelight x Bridgerton promises an evening even Her Majesty would wrinkle the corners of her mouth for. Mind you, there will be no viscounts, dukes, or duchesses entering the marriage mart in attendance, but the sound of “Cheap Thrills” by Sia and more will make you feel like one.
Candlelight: Best of Bridgerton on Strings
Considered to be somewhat of an accomplished wordsmith and an unfailingly credible messenger, this author takes it upon themself to reveal the circumstances of the highly anticipated performance.
The neo-Gothic architecture and distinguished interiors of St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral should suffice to make audiences feel as though they are seated in a different era. And cue the Cairn String Quartet playing Ariana Grande’s indifferent “thank u, next” and Billie Eilish’s sinister “bad buy”, among others, as heard in the Regency romance hit for the ultimate Bridgerton effect.
Surrounded by thousands of flickering candles and familiar notes, one can imagine they are in the midst of a ball at the Hastings House, engaging in some premarital scandal in the back of a carriage, or feeling as green-eyed as the Duke. Whatever scandalous role you have been dreaming to assume, Candlelight has already scheduled its calling hour.
On the 27th of September, a rare jewel indeed shall shine at a magnificent venue in Edinburgh. No, Candlelight does not expect attendees to don the finest silk from the local modiste — a tragedy in my esteemed opinion. The doors shall open 45 minutes before the start time, allowing plenty of time for getting into High Society character.
How Candlelight x Bridgerton fares is yet to be determined, dear reader, but previous concerts tell us it’s set to enjoy a most positive reception.
Yours truly,
Lady Whistledown
