Since the last time we saw Black Mirror on our screens, the world has hurtled further into the future with new terrifying technologies such as ChatGPT. It’s been four years since the last season, but the science fiction anthology series feels no less visionary. But what surprises will it have in store when it returns next month (June 15)? This new trailer for Black Mirror Season 6 should keep us guessing until then.
Sometimes funny, often scary, Black Mirror has been lauded by critics and audiences alike for its prescient storytelling. Created by Charlie Brooker, the dystopian series usually features advanced technology and acts as a warning for our futuristic times since making its debut in 2011. (Previous plotlines have covered ‘social credit’ systems, murderous Boston Dynamics-style robot dogs, and reviving deceased loved ones through technology.)
So far there have been five seasons, featuring 22 episodes, plus one interactive movie released on Netflix, titled Bandersnatch. Previous stars of the series include Miley Cyrus, Daniel Kaluuya, Maxine Peake and Anthony Mackie. Season 6 of Black Mirror looks set to be just as jam-packed with talent as ever. Consisting of five episodes, just some of the cast includes Salma Hayek, Michael Cera, Aaron Paul, Kate Mara, Rory Culkin, Zazie Beetz and many more.
Promising to be “the most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected season yet”, the trailer doesn’t give too much away. The first episode (or “film” as it is being called), ‘Joan Is Awful’, receives the most screen time. Seemingly about the titular Joan, she discovers her life is getting biographical treatment from a popular streaming site. (Is that a bit too on the nose?)
‘Loch Henry’ looks to be about a documentary filmmaker; ‘Beyond the Sea’ is about two men on a space mission; the Hollywood-inspired thriller ‘Mazey Day’; and ‘Demon 79’, a 70s-style horror. But knowing Black Mirror, we’ve probably only seen a scratch of what’s coming. All we can be sure of is there are plenty more surprises to come from Season 6.
Black Mirror Season 6 will stream on Netflix from June 15.
